Our Philosophy
At North Shore Garden Design, we believe a garden should feel like a place — not a collection of plants. Our approach is rooted in the idea that landscapes create a sense of belonging when they are designed with clarity, intention, and respect for the natural world.
Over years of travel and study, from the structured estates of England to the contemplative gardens of China to the bold native landscapes of Australia, we've developed a deep understanding of how design, ecology, and human experience intersect in outdoor spaces.
Every project we undertake is guided by a simple principle: balance. We bring together structure and nature — steel and stone, concrete and plants, wood and gravel — to create compositions that are both grounded and alive.
Rooted in Experience
Jonathan Morse founded North Shore Garden Design, a company dedicated to creating and caring for exceptional residential landscapes on Vashon Island and the greater Seattle area.
Jonathan has been passionate about plants and gardening since the age of 11. With more than 35 years of experience in landscaping and horticulture, including over 25 years working on Vashon Island, he brings deep plant knowledge and a thoughtful design approach to every landscape he creates and maintains.
Over the years, Jonathan has traveled extensively to explore gardens around the world—from England to China to Australia. Through these experiences, he has studied the textures, forms, and compositions that make gardens both beautiful and meaningful, continually drawing inspiration for the landscapes he designs.
In a unique way, Jonathan blends horticultural expertise with artistic creativity, focusing on plant combinations, structure, and architectural elements that elevate a garden beyond a simple collection of plants. His work centers on creating landscapes that feel connected to their surroundings and provide spaces where people can truly relax and experience a sense of place.
